Thanks to corporate partners and generous donors, The First Tee offers a number of events for participants. These events often become life-changing experiences as they create an ideal time for young people to expand their horizons, meet new people and learn more about themselves.

Most opportunities use an application and committee review process to select participants who will benefit the most from each opportunity. For more information about participant opportunities, contact Justin Ratte at (503) 722-1530, Ext. 3 or jratte@thefirstteegp.org.

A/B HONOR ROLL

The First Tee A/B Honor Roll program encourages all participants to excel academically and to stay on track for eligibility in The First Tee Scholars program. Participants of all ages who earn A’s and B’s (or equivalent) on their report cards will receive certificates. Honor Roll certificates are distributed twice per year.

When you receive your report card, send an email to jratte@thefirstteegp.org if you have all A’s and B’s. Your name will be displayed on The First Tee of Greater Portland’s website the following semester!

LIFE SKILLS AND LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

Each summer, selected participants of The First Tee attend a week-long Life Skills and Leadership Academy. They participate in championship golf, life skills activities and career exploration, experience dorm living and meet a wide variety of young people from around the world.

PLAYer ADVANCED ACADEMY

This eight-day academy is intended for advanced players within the network pursuing collegiate golf. The PLAYer Advanced Academy provides an experience rich in both golf life skills learning that will improve the participants’ chances to compete at a higher level.

THE FIRST TEE TRAINING PROGRAM AT IJGA

Through a partnership between The First Tee and the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy (IJGA), participants are selected to attend a week-long training at the IJGA in Hilton Head, S.C. Activities include daily instruction with Hank Haney IJGA instructors. The First Tee life skills curriculum is infused into the Hank Haney instruction throughout the program. Selected participants will need to pay for their transportation, however The First Tee of Greater Portland will pay part of the participant fee.

RBS ACHIEVERS OF THE YEAR AWARDS

The RBS Achievers of the Year Awards are given to participants who have overcome challenges in their lives while upholding The First Tee Nine Core Values. A committee selects a group of semifinalists from chapter nominations, then the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) chooses one male and one female winner, each of whom receives a $10,000 college scholarship. The remaining semifinalists each receive a $ 2,000 college scholarship to be used for ongoing education.

NATURE VALLEY FIRST TEE OPEN AT PEBBLE BEACH

Each summer the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach showcases the talents and character of young people who participate at The First Tee chapters. An official Champions Tour event at Pebble Beach Golf Links on the Monterey Peninsula, the tournament pairs one junior with a Champions Tour player and two amateurs. The tournament is televised nationally on Golf Channel.

NATURE VALLEY FIRST TEE OPEN ART CONTEST

The Nature Valley First Tee Open is now accepting original art from current participants of The First Tee to be featured on the cover of this year’s tournament pairing sheet.

SANKATY HEAD CADDIE CAMP

The First Tee home office is excited to announce Sankaty Head Caddie Camp – an opportunity open to male participants of The First Tee, ages 13-15. Supported by the Sankaty Head Foundation, each summer the Camp is home to 60 caddies and staff members. Camp Sankaty Head strives to develop academic, moral, physical, and leadership skills in the context of a residential caddie education program. Campers live in a structured, disciplined camp environment and spend part of each day caddying for members of the Sankaty Head Golf Club. Campers are paid for caddying and also have the opportunity to qualify for academic scholarships awarded annually by the Sankaty Head Foundation. On average, campers earn a minimum of $4,000 just caddying and scholarships are available after two summers. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $8,000.

AMERICA’S FUTURE – THE COCA-COLA COMPANY

Dedicated to impacting communities, Coca-Cola Company supports The First Tee by offering five participants annually the chance to experience working at one of the largest corporations in the world. The semifinalists spend two days in the heart of downtown Atlanta visiting the Coca-Cola campus, attending new-hire training, meeting with executives and taking part in interviews to determine the winner of a $5,000 scholarship. Four runners-up each receive a $1,000 scholarship. The winner also returns to Atlanta for a VIP trip to THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola.

THE FIRST TEE OUTSTANDING PARTICIPANT AWARD

The First Tee Outstanding Participant Award represents the pinnacle of accomplishment for deserving participants. It recognizes exemplary achievement in the areas of academics, community service, chapter involvement, leadership, essay responses and letters of recommendation. Winners receive a college scholarship provided by Founding Corporate Partner Shell Oil Company.

THE SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The Scholars Program is a distinction awarded to participants who excel in academics, leadership, character development, and chapter and community involvement. More than 20 colleges and universities offer partial merit-based or leadership scholarships to participants who are seniors in high school. A student designated as a Scholar will be eligible to participate in any educational scholarship programs made available by The First Tee and/or one of its partner institutions.

The First Tee home office is proud to announce a new participant opportunity – the Auntie Anne’s Leaders & Entrepreneurs Forum. The First Tee partnered with Auntie Anne’s to create an exciting event that will combine leadership and entrepreneurship from Auntie Anne’s with The First Tee Life Skills Curriculum. During the three-day forum, participants will attend interactive sessions covering career and community leadership from Auntie Anne’s executives and franchise partners and spend time at Disney theme parks.

The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits Summit is a brand new participant opportunity that debuted in 2014! This will be an interactive educational event to inspire participants to take ownership of their own health and contribute to healthier communities through a service project. It will be held in conjunction with the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation.

The First Tee Par-3 Championship is a 36-hole individual stroke play competition. Boys and girls will play in separate categories. At the conclusion of the 36 holes a boy and girl par-3 champion will be determined. An 18 hole Territory Cup event will be played in a modified Ryder Cup format. The territory with the highest point’s value will be the winner and awarded the Territory Cup after the final round. A Life Skills component will be incorporated into the overall event.

wellsfargoWELLS FARGO SUCCEED TOGETHER

This year, the Wells Fargo Succeeding Together essay contest is encouraging teenage participants of The First Tee to showcase the importance of having and being a part of a “Go-To-Team”.To enter, eligible participants must submit two essays, an application, photograph and release form by March 29nd, 2016. Our panel of judges will select ten finalists and then ultimately four winners, each of whom will win a trip to the Wells Fargo Championship with one grand prize winner experiencing the thrill of playing golf with a PGA TOUR pro during the pro-am on May 4th, 2016.
